Press Release - May 10, 2025

The Ohio Railway Museum (ORM) proudly announces its Full Steam Ahead "Vision for the Future" Development Plan, an ambitious and forward-thinking initiative aimed at transforming the museum into a leading destination for railway history, education, and the preservation of Ohio's rich railroad heritage. This groundbreaking plan is bolstered by a landmark lease agreement with Norfolk Southern Corporation, paving the way for the museum's expansion through the development of existing property and newly acquired adjacent land.

Highlights of the Visionary Development Plan

  • Enhanced Security and Campus Definition: Installation of fencing and gates to secure and define the expanded museum grounds for the safety and enjoyment of guests.
  • Expanded Track Infrastructure: Addition of 2,900 feet of new track, including a short running track (Main 2), yard leads, and a display track. The museum’s original (Main) line will double in length along the historic Columbus, Delaware, and Marion Railway (CD&M) right-of-way, reaching as far as Indianola Park.
  • New Facilities: Construction of key operational and display facilities, including a three-track Car Barn, a replica interlocking tower, a single-stall trolley barn, and an engine & rolling stock maintenance building to enhance operational efficiency and preservation efforts.
  • Dedication to Restoration: Preservation of significant historic structures, such as the old PRR Freight Depot, the Silcott Scale House, and the Worthington Passenger Depot, ensuring their continued contribution to Ohio's railway history.
  • Visitor Experience Enhancements: Creation of accessible walking paths, elevated train platforms, and a native foliage Garden Railway exhibit designed to immerse guests in the world of railroads and enrich the overall museum experience.
  • Modern Amenities: Addition of a dedicated Modern Restroom Facility and the innovative Concession Caboose, providing comfort and convenience for every visitor.

The plan emphasizes sustainability and authenticity, ensuring each project aligns with ORM’s mission to preserve historical integrity while incorporating innovative, energy-efficient, and conservation-minded solutions. Phased projects will include stabilizing and restoring historic buildings, constructing an Observation Deck for train enthusiasts, rebuilding and extending trolley wires to support heritage trolley operations, and creating green spaces with native plants and pollinator gardens along our right of way.

Community Engagement

The Ohio Railway Museum invites the community to join them in this exciting transformation. Updates regarding fundraising efforts and project timelines will be shared as progress unfolds. Together, these developments will ensure that the museum continues to honor Ohio’s railway legacy while inspiring and educating future generations.
